How To Spot Learning Disabilities In Children

Teachers and parents often overlook the problem of learning disabilities in children. The basic reason for the same is, they get failed to spot the early signs of disabilities.  For that reason, many kids don’t get the diagnosis until they spend two or three years in school. However, Conscientious and observant parents may recognize signs of learning disabilities when their child is in Kindergarten Program as some indications of developmental hindrance are noticeable in early childhood. There are some resources and tactics that can help, but first, spot the issue.

Notice your toddler’s initial growth for signs of learning disabilities. Spot the developmental delays in different areas such as:

  1. Fine motor – No or fewer muscle movements
  2. Cognitive skill - Aptitude to assume and resolve issues
  3. Communication and language - Ability to recognize words
  4. Social and emotional - Skill to interact properly with others and illustrate correct emotional responses
  5. Gross motor – Big muscle movements like walking and standing 


Normally, by 1 year, your toddler should be capable of standing without support. He may illustrate preferences of his favorite toys and person and also show nervousness when his parents go away.

Get your Child for Regular Checkups

At the time of the birth, children get examined by pediatricians to spot any vital signs and responses to several stimulations. Later, during regular checkups, the doctor tests a child for normal development. Keep a note of every concern you want the doctor to take care of. If there is an indication of an issue, make an appointment with a specialist for assessment and treatment.

Child’s Development at School

After a few months in Kindergarten Program, or in a toddler daycare, plan a meeting with your kid’s teacher. Share all concerns you have about your child’s study and his growth as compared to other children there. Some Montessori schools also provide screening and assessment to decide if developmental delays are there.    
Third grade is a vital year for recognizing disabilities, so be alert and suspect an issue if your kid:

  • Has behavioral and attention problem
  • Can’t connect sounds and letters
  • Can’t go over information or copy texts
  • Can’t identify with number concepts
  • Poor memory
